A bit about myself~

Barra Convery is an emerging, award-winning director and filmmaker based in Galway, Ireland. Known for an earnest and – creative sensibility, his works explore themes of modern Irish cultural, locality and language, engender expectations and perspectives from the social periphery.

His debut narrative short West of the Horizon, a bilingual story exploring the chance encounter of a runaway trans-teenager and bereaved, suicidal fisherman has been selected to screen in several festivals and premiered at the 2024 Galway Film Fleadh.

Barra has been selected to take part in several skills development and mentorship schemes by Ardán, National Talent Academies and Screen Talent Europe, including Scéal to Set led by Dathaí Keane and as Irish representative in Odense Film Festival’s 2023 ‘Talent Camp’.

In 2023, Barra worked as First Assistant Director to Oscar long-listed filmmakers The Morgan Brothers on feature film Froggie which went on to premiere at the Galway Film Fleadh. Barra also directed several music videos and took part in Youth Music Video Competition through First Cut Film Festival, and was mentored by Bob Gallagher and Brendan Canty.


In the years following Covid, Barra created several non-narrative/experimental films, culminating in the adaptation of a series of poems Finding Mothers funded by the Arts Council and was awarded a Pre-Selection to Cork International Film Festival. Barra graduated Screen & Film School, Brighton in 2020 with First Class Honours in (BA) Film Production, after studying for two years in Galway Technical Institute. Barra has a background in music and theatre performance, having professionally trained with Macnas Theatre Company for 8 years.

Barra is currently in development of his next narrative short and debut feature film.
