When Ciara, a “touched” teenager, discovers the secret of her family’s merfolk hunting past, she risks confronting her Grandfather at Christmas dinner. As Colm regales a twisted love story of a fisherman and mermaid whose son’s were culled for fortune, Ciara realises the dark truth of why she was born.
Inspired from literature surrounding sea-peoples and the Irish oral storytelling tradition, MUCK challenges the lens of folk-horror by contrasting aesthetic expectations of the native and indigenous with the violent and exploitative legacy of colonialism.
